2016-09-01 Thu

India Post came up with an unusual stamp featuring the classics of Indian philately. Issued in the year of 1977, this stamp depicts the first stamp of Asia – The Scinde Dawk stamp.

When the East India Company established its hold over Sind, the introduction of the postage stamp had become imperative for the smooth working of administration. Hence, the stamps those were issued in the district of Sind came to be known as the Scinde Dawks which are considered to be the first stamp issued in Asia.

The Scinde Dawk stamps were issued in three stages with a little improvement each time. Among them the vermilion red stamp was the first one to introduce in Asia in the year of 1852. Though printed in abundance these stamps are rare. Being the first stamps of Asia they are one of the most valuable stamps of the world.

This stamp bearing the image of red scinde dawk stamp was issued to commemorate the 125th year of its release. In the year the stamp was issued i.e. in 1977 India hosted First Asian International Philatelic Exhibition – Asiana 77.

The occasion was equally historic.
